'To Kill a Mockingbird author' dies at 89

Harper Lee, award-winning author of 'To Kill A Mockingbird' and 'Go Set a Watchman' dies at the age of 89.

Multiple sources confirmed Friday morning that, Nelle Harper Lee, who won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction in 1961 for her book, "To Kill a Mockingbird," is dead.

Lee was born April 28, 1926, in Monroeville, Alabama and she is the youngest of four children of lawyer Amasa Coleman Lee and Frances Cunningham Finch Lee.

Her book "To Kill a Mockingbird" addresses racial issues in the South, and it was assigned widely in schools.

Lee was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Bush in 2007.

She said for years that she would never write another book, but the manuscript for a second novel "Go Set A Watchman," was published in 2015.

Tributes have been pouring in on social media, Author Malorie Blackman posted "Harper Lee R.I.P." on her Twitter account.

Apple CEO Tim Cook tweeted: "Rest in peace, Harper Lee. The one thing that doesn't abide by majority rule is a person's conscience."
