Father of Argentine football legend, Diego Maradona has died at the age of 87.

Don Diego according to local media died on Thursday, June 25 after heart and respiratory problems.

Don Diego, a factory worker, came to Buenos Aires from the northern province of Corrientes in the 1950s, raising eight children in the Villa Fiorito shanty town on the southern edge of the capital.

Maradona is his first son born in 1960.

He stood by his controversial son throughout his turbulent career which started well before ending in shame due to drug and alcohol abuse.

Don Diego occasionally arranged asados, or barbecues, for the Argentinian national team, even on tours such as the 1986 World Cup triumph in Mexico.
