Real Madrid and Portugal star Cristiano Ronaldo has a new bust of him at the Santiago Bernabeu, designed by the Portuguese sculptor, Jose Antonio Navarro Arteaga.

The bust, a sculpture in the image of his head, is almost a metre high, weighs 60 kilograms and reportedly costs less than 50,000 pounds.

Its much better than the other one

The statue was reportedly inspired by the other infamous statue of Ronaldo done by Emanuel Santos, which stands outside the airport in Ronaldo’s hometown of Madeira.

It is claimed that Arteaga’s young son told his father he could do better when he saw the statue outside Madeira’s airport.

After the statue was unveiled, Santos was criticised on social media by fans and observers who were amused by the inaccuracy of his work. The sculptor even acknowledged the reactions, saying “Not even Jesus pleased everyone”.

A legend, appreciated

Ronaldo’s new bust will sit inside his club’s museum in Madrid.  The former Manchester United has been a major part of the team's resurgence, leading with goals on the way to two Champions League trophies.

Real Madrid’s director of institutional relations, Emilio Butragueno was present as the bust was presented to the club in early November.

Ronaldo was missing though, as his side was playing Tottenham in a Champions League fixture.

The new bust has earned its creator, Arteaga, a lot of praise for its near-accuracy and personality.

“I used various photos [of Ronaldo] to work with,” the Seville-based sculptor told the Spanish daily, El Mundo. “I tried to reflect the interior strength of this personality, when he is about to take a free kick or a corner."

Besides the statue at the airport, Madeira’s favourite son also has a statue of him on the seafront outside the Cristiano Ronaldo museum in his hometown.
