UK university cancels exams after students copied answers from online marking scheme
A stir occurred at the University of Bristol, Bristol, UK, after the school cancelled the examination results of first-year Geography students claiming it was compromised.
Lecturers had set exactly the same questions from the previous year for the freshers' exam on Geographical Methods.
Unfortunately, some of the students had seen the marking scheme which was available online, giving them undue advantage over those who had not accessed it.
“People found last year’s paper through connections and so a lot of people in our year knew the answer to every question that came up," one student told The Tab.
It was also claimed that some of the students copied answered directly from the marking online
Following complaints, the Geography Department cancelled the exam in an email quoted by The Independent.
"We feel that this examination has been compromised; it would appear that a considerable number of students had been given access to last year's answers where equally many students had not," the email read.
"As such, it has been decided to nullify this exam. Those of you who undertook independent learning for this examination, however, receive the benefit of the formative skills it has given you."
Some students are however not happy with the development.
“Seeing as how some of us hadn’t seen the answers before, we were quite pleased with our initial results," a student said.
All the students will now have to rewrite the exam.
