Jose Mourinho was sent to the stands as his side suffered their fifth loss of the season in the English Premier League, falling 1-2 to West Ham at Upton Park in Saturday, October 24 fixture.
After seeing off Aston Villa last week at home, Chelsea traveled to London neighbors West Ham to seek another win which would have pushed them up the table.
Now they are in 15 position.
Both teams contained each other, but West Ham looked more threatening as the match kicked off.
Dimitri Payet was the danger-man for West Ham and almost put the Hammers in the lead with a well taken Free-kick which was tipped over by Asmir Begovic.
Payet took the resulting corner-kick in the 17th minute which evaded Ramires and Diego Costa before it got to Zarate in the near post who finished to put West Ham in the lead.
Chelsea came out looking for an equalizer but was however reduced to nine men after Nemanja Matic was showed the second yellow card and the subsequent red for cynically bringing down Diafra Sakho.
Chelsea players protested the red card which earned referee Jonathan Moss.
Mourinho who is already on a suspended stadium ban for previous offences this season was sent off to the stands after approaching the referee at half time.
Chelsea substituted the unimpressive Fabregas for John Obi Mikel which gave the Blues the much needed composure in midfield to build on.
They levelled in 56th minute after Zouma and Cahill challenged for Willian's corner, the ball falling kindly for the latter to net the equalizer.
West Ham with their one man-advantage pressed for the winner and got it with just 10 minutes left to play.
Andy Carroll out jumped everybody to head in the winner, his first goal January.
