All Blacks must be physical at breakdown - Liam Messam

All Blacks forward Liam Messam hinted their Bledisloe Cup wake-up call against the Wallabies has revitalised the New Zealanders, ahead of the series decider on Saturday.

Messam did not play in the Bledisloe opener, which also doubled as the Rugby Championship decider - one the Australians won 27-19 to be the first country other than New Zealand to win the four nations tournament.

Another cup they are on the brink of relinquishing is the exponentially more valuable Bledisloe variety, but Messam said the win could spark the All Blacks to life " and they will be out to extend their 12-year stronghold on the Trans-Tasman trophy at Eden Park.

"It's an exciting challenge and already the excitement - you can see in the boys, the way they turned up to the gym this morning," Messam told a news conference.

"They're really excited about starting this week fresh and just getting stuck in."

Messam, 31, is pushing for re-selection after being left out in Sydney, and the loose forward said he has the answer for the All Blacks - more physicality around the breakdown.

"It's simple the Wallabies were outstanding in the breakdown and we got beaten to the punch," the Toshiba Brave Lupus man said.

"As an All Blacks pack we needed to be a lot more physical.

"The Bledisloe Cup means more than sending off an individual... we have got to make sure we do things right to keep that cup in New Zealand."

Lock Brodie Retallick agreed with Messam that their work around the ruck needed to improve.

"Good pressure from the Wallabies, they played pretty smart," the Chiefs back-rower said.

"It's been a good honest review just like any other week, we have got a few things to get right for the weekend.

"I think we have got to get our roles right in the breakdown and react when we are not in our structure."
