Jean-Claude “Baby Doc” Duvalier, a former Haitian dictator has passed on in Port-au-Prince, the nation's capital.

Duvalier died of a heart attack at a private residence on October 4, 2014, his lawyer told The Associated Press.

The late “Baby Doc” had taken over from his father François, aka “Papa Doc”, after the latter’s death in 1971 and he assumed the post of “president for life.”

Jean-Claude was 19 years old at the time but he ruled with a bloody brutality and looted the nation’s treasury. He was eventually overthrown and forced into exile in France in 1986.

Duvalier returned to Haiti in 2011 in solidarity with the nation after it suffered a massive earthquake.

President Michel J. Martelly responded to the death saying:

“On behalf of the entire government and people of Haiti, I take this sad occasion to extend my sincere sympathies to his family, his relatives and his supporters across the country,”

Jean-Claude “Baby Doc” Duvalier was 63 years old at the time of his passing.
