The Australian Rugby Union (ARU) has thrown its support behind besieged coach Ewen McKenzie amid reports he is on the verge of being sacked.

New South Wales Waratahs' Super Rugby championship-winning coach Michael Cheika has reportedly been sounded out by the ARU with the view of replacing McKenzie.

McKenzie's future has been cast into doubt after the Australians' embarrassing loss in Argentina in October and a number of tumultuous off-field problems, including suspended Wallabies playmaker Kurtley Beale.

But ARU CEO Bill Pulver released a statement dismissing reports that McKenzie is facing the sack ahead of Saturday's Bledisloe Cup Test against the All Blacks in Brisbane.

"I can confirm the ARU (Australian Rugby Union) has not had any conversations with any other coaches regarding the Wallabies coaching position," Pulver said.

"Ewen is coaching the team this weekend and next Friday he will board the plane with the team for the spring (European) tour, and is contracted to Australian Rugby to lead the Wallabies to next year's Rugby World Cup."
