The House of Reps is angry with telcos over mass sack, tax evasion
Five tech companies are expected to defend “queries on their failure to remit to government coffers, actual taxes as a result of their activities in Nigeria.”
According to a DailyPost report, all five tech companies are expected to defend “queries on their failure to remit to government coffers, actual taxes as a result of their activities in Nigeria.”
Apparently, this is not the first time the lower house has summoned the management of these companies. The DailyPost reports that the Chairman, House Committee on Telecommunications, Saheed Fijabi (APC, Oyo) said this particular summons comes after a couple other invitations by the House to the CEOs, all of which have not been honored.
The DailyPost report also revealed that Fijabi said the Green House will not take another snub lightly and it will not accept representatives of any of the companies because “such persons cannot provide satisfactory explanations.”

Fijabi, according to the report, said the management teams of the summoned companies have been asked to prepare the reasons for their recent actions, which they will lay before the House.
It’s hard to tell where all of this coming from seeing as the reasons that may have influenced the layoffs, which the Reps are angry about, are quite obvious. The recession and forex downturn have affected many, many businesses across various sectors of the economy.
A direct (or indirect) result of that has been the loss of jobs for Nigerians (thus increasing Nigeria’s unemployment rate) and the loss of revenue for companies (which is why telcos and other companies have been downsizing).
What do you think about this? Do you think the Reps are justifiably angry? Or is this just a ploy to make them look like they actually care about the masses? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.
