The deceased, Mr Idowu Oyewole, who was a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) was reportedly shot dead in his home located along Akure/Owo road by three armed men suspected to be armed robbers.
Daily Post reports that the residents of the area along with police authority and family members have been thrown into mourning.
The late Mr Oyewole's son, Dare, narrated the incident to reporters at their home, revealing that a neighbour came to their house at about 7:30 pm to inform them that armed robbers had invaded his home.
The deceased reportedly took his service pistol and returned with the neighbour hoping to dispatch the robbers, who on noticing his approached, engaged him in a shootout.
The neighbour who pleaded anonymity, returned to the home of the deceased, warning them to lock up their home as the robbers had taken to the streets.
The deceased was reportedly discovered on the ground the next morning. It was speculated that the deceased had been on his way to a nearby hospital but was unable to make it there.
Confirming the sad incident, the Police Public Relation Officer, Mr Femi Joseph, said that investigation into the case has commenced.
