TBoss, there is no pride in not knowing the National Anthem

Last night, Wednesday, April 5, 2017,

TBoss couldn't sing the first stanza and her inability to complete it became a big deal among the legion of Big Brother Naija fans.

The general reaction hasn't been too good for TBoss. Her inability to finish the National Anthem has seen her critics and haters drag her. As Big Brother Naija enters the last stretch, this misstep might cost TBoss the coveted N25M.

There are those who have come to TBoss' defence saying that Nigerians are over reacting to her goof.

When it comes to the National Anthem there is no such thing as an overreaction. A citizen of his or her country must know the National Anthem and recite it when called upon. There is nothing cool or posh about mumbling the lines of the National Anthem.

Yes, Nigerians have a love-hate relationship with this country, especially young Nigerians. They are disenchanted with a country that has continued to fail them over and over again. Many people have mentally seceded from Nigeria and are emotionally done.

These are valuable points, but it is still no reason not to know your country's anthem. There is no excuse unless you have spent the majority of your childhood and teenage years overseas.

This is not a shot at TBoss. There are millions of Nigerians who do not know the National Anthem and Pledge. It's a shame really because the words of our National Anthem and Pledge are beautiful. Ideally, they should represent our dreams, hopes and values.

Even though Nigeria is far from being a great country, it doesn't mean we should all not know the sacred words that bind us together. There are many countries far worse than Nigeria, but that doesn't mean people from these nations don't know their National Anthems.

There is no need to be defensive or shift blame like TBoss. If you do not know the National Anthem, take your L and learn it as soon as possible.
