Singer criticizes Nigerian artists for using Ghanaian elements in their music

Nigerian singer Mr Eazi has criticised Nigerian musicians for utilising Ghanaian elements in their music.

The singer who blew in Nigeria in 2016, has continued to be vocal about the influence of Ghanaian elements in the creation of Nigerian pop music.

The singer went further saying that most of the top Afrobeats and African songs are all on the merger of Ghana and Nigerian sounds, a sound that he is the pioneer of.

Mr Eazi, the pioneer of Banku Music – a fusion sound he describes as the mixture of “Ghanaian bounces, Ghanaian highlife, Nigerian chord progressions, and Nigerian patterns” made this known when he was a guest on Capital Xtra‘s Reggae Recipe.

“The speed at which I’ve moved is scary to me…cause it took my contemporaries 5, 6 years,” Eazi said.

“And that is what has been this year, if you want to count like 5 afrobeat, it’s like everybody just realized that ‘yo what formula is Mr Eazi using?’ Ok we’re gonna end up doing it. December last year almost 60% of Nigerian artiste were in Ghana playing shows”

Eazi further discredited their use of Ghanaian elements saying: “Now everybody is using words like Banku, Shitor, Maami, Odoo, Sika. My guy, how come? How do you know Odoo? How do you know Sika? How do you know Maami? From where, what’s the connection?

“I’s just like an American artist just rapping about something in the UK, and you know he has no knowledge of it.”

And wasting no time, Nigerian singer, Runtown has clapped back at Mr Eazi for his comments. Tweeting from his handle, the ‘Mad over you’ singer said: “Bout to drop that new sound again and pls Don't get mad when i finish what you think you started”

This isn’t the first time Mr Eazi has made statements highlighting this. In January 2017, the singer was roundly criticized for tweeting about Ghana influencing Nigerian music. His mixtape “Life is Eazi Vol.1: Accra to Lagos,” was released in February 2017.
