Scheme promises to get justice for murdered corps member

Modupe Tawose who was a Batch A corps member serving in Ogun State was allegedly lured into a bush raped and murdered.

Tawose who was a Batch A corps member serving at the Ogun State Ministry of Housing was allegedly lured into a bush by Festus Udoh, 29, her driving instructor on Saturday, December 9.

Four days after, her decomposing body was discovered in a bush with her hand tied to a tree at Abule Ayo in Odeda Local Government Area

Meanwhile, Udoh, the suspect, has confessed to the crime and has been remanded in prison while awaiting trial.

However, John Okpo, the Ogun State NYSC Coordinator, during a condolence visit to the family of the deceased in Ibadan, Oyo State, on Monday, December 18 has assured the family that justice would be served.

Okpo traumatised by the incident said the NYSC is saddened by the occurrence.

He said, “the NYSC family nationwide is sad for the raping and eventual murder of our beloved and patriotic corps member, the late Miss Modupe Tawose. We strongly condemn the act and will go to any length to defend and fight for the rights of our members and in this case, ensure justice is delivered.

“We will do all to ensure Mr Festus Udoh is brought to book as this will serve as a deterrent to other miscreants and evil doers in the society”.

He however enjoined corps members to always be security conscious and promptly report any security threat to appropriate authorities.

“Corps members are to save the distress call centre numbers given to them during the orientation course in their various camps on the phones in case of emergencies.

“They are also advised to move in groups and not to follow strangers, even known people with questionable characters''.

NYSC  and the safety of Corp members is becoming an issue

In the last few months, the NYSC had had issues bothering on security and safety of corps members.

In Nassarawa state two corps members drowned in a river in the state in October. Similarly, in December another corps member, Collins Ohaegbu drowned in a river at his place of primary assignment in Akwa Ibom state.

Another corps member who was serving in Ogun state was killed by gunmen in October because he refused to surrender his phone to them.
