But there is so much more to him. Here are five things you need to know about the popular Man of God.

Early Childhood

Williams Folorunso Kumuyi was born in Erin-Ijesha, Osun State on June 6, 1941.

His parents were Anglicans and made sure to raise their children the Christian way.

This meant that they would have early morning devotions, where they sing hymns, read the Bible, and pray. This laid the foundation for his faith.

Education

Pastor Kumuyi attended and graduated with a high school diploma from Mayflower School in Ikenne, near Ijebu-ode in 1961.

He did a postgraduate course at the University of Lagos. Afterwards, he became a lecturer in the Department of Mathematics at the same University in 1973.

The cleric had his tertiary education at the University of Ibadan, where he graduated with a first-class honors degree in mathematics in 1967.

Christian Faith

Pastor Kumuyi became a born-again Christian on Sunday, April 5, 1964.

In his words, “I grew up in a very strict Christian home. We would get up in the morning, read the Bible, sing hymns, and go to church regularly. When I went to secondary school I lost interest in the church because our principal taught us atheism. But after a while, I thought again and started going to various churches in town.

“Eventually, in 1963, a group of singers and preachers from a Gospel church got permission to come to the school. I understood the Gospel message and was born again on April 5th, 1964. I read and lots of other books. I got involved with the and I grew.”

Ministry

The Deeper Life Bible Church started while he was a lecturer in Unilag. It began with a Bible study group with 15 students who asked him to teach them about the Bible. This happened in August 1973.

By the 1980’s, this number had grown to thousands, which eventually led to the formal establishment of the church.

Now, the church reportedly gets 120,000 people every Sunday with at least 500 churches in Lagos and the headquarters, located at Gbagada, Lagos.

The church has been named “the World’s Largest Megachurch” while the founder has been called one of the “500 most powerful people on the planet” by Foreign Policy magazine. Pastor Kumuyi is also an author of at least 10 books.

Marriage and Personal Life

Pastor Kumuyi met his first wife, the late Sister Abiodun, in 1972.

The two got close while she was a volunteer and a part of the choir.  They eventually tied the knot at the Ikoyi Marriage Registry and had their white wedding at The Chapel of Resurrection at the University of Lagos.

They had two children, Jeremiah and John.

Sadly, she passed away on Saturday, April 11, 2009, after a brief illness in their Ayobo, Ipaja, Lagos home.

18 months later, Pastor Kumuyi took another chance at love by marrying his second wife, Esther Blaize Kumuyi in 2010.

They had their first official outing on Sunday, October 24, 2010, at the Trinity Church in Brentwood, UK.
