Novak Djokovic did what was expected of him at the US Open on Monday, crushing Diego Schwartzman in the first round.

Despite his scratchy form, the Serbian world number one was never likely to be troubled by Argentine Schwartzman and that proved to be the case as he won 6-1 6-2 6-4.

Other than a few entertaining points at Arthur Ashe Stadium, world number 79 Schwartzman was completely outclassed.

Djokovic, not needing to be at his best so early in his bid for an eighth grand slam title, got the job done in one hour 37 minutes to set up a meeting with Frenchman Paul-Henri Mathieu.

He mixed 24 winners with 27 unforced errors, while Schwartzman went 10 and 24 respectively.

Djokovic broke three times in the first set as Schwartzman served at just 33 per cent.

Broken once in the opening set, Djokovic's response was emphatic as he gave up just one point on his serve in the second.

Schwartzman fought on during the third but he was no match for Djokovic.
