Here are the highlights of the major stories in sports this week.
1.Aruna Quadri wins Nigeria Open
Nigeria's lead table tennis star undefinedafter a four sets to two win over France’s Hachard Antoine (11-13, 11-3, 8-11, 11-7, 11-5, 11-7) in the final played on Sunday, August 12.
The victory was the first time a Nigeria will triumph over the foreign based table tennis contestants in the competition.
Quadri won after failing to progress in the 2016 edition where he lost to rival Egypts Omar Assar.
He and the winner of the female event were rewarded with 5,000 dollars each.
2. Victor Moses retires from Super Eagles
Super Eagles forward from international football on Wednesday, August 15.
Moses announced his retirement from the national team through a statement on his official Instagram account.
He highlighted participating in two World Cup tournament and winning the 2013 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) with the Super Eagles as memorable moments.
He said, ""There are so many highlights that stand out for me over the years; from making my debut, to playing in two World Cups and being a part of the team to win the African Nations Cup for first time for our nation since 1994 being just a few of them."
3. FIFA give Nigeria deadline
The World Football governing body (FIFA) issued an ultimatum to the (NFF) to resolve its internal crisis or face sanctions by Monday, August 20.
The statement issued on the FIFA Website read, “In line with art. 16 par. 1 of the FIFA Statutes, the Bureau of the FIFA Council decided that if by Monday, 20 August 2018, at 12:00 (CET), the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) offices are not handed back to the legitimate NFF executive committee under President Amaju Melvin Pinnick, who was duly elected on 30 September 2014, the NFF will be suspended with immediate effect for contravening art. 14 par. 1 i) and art. 19, as well as art. 14 par. 1 a) of the FIFA Statutes.”
4. Super Eagles drop in FIFA Ranking
The Super Eagles of Nigeria dropped from 48th to 49th in the latest FIFA ranking released by FIFA after the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
The Super Eagles lost two friendly matches against England and Czech Republic, and lost two group stage matches against Iceland and Argentina with their only win coming against Iceland.
The result means that the Super Eagles are now seventh in Africa behind Tunisia (24), Senegal (24), Congo DR (37), Ghana (45), Morocco (46), Cameroon (47)
5. Falconets crash out of U-20 World Cup
Nigeria's after they lost 1-2 to Spain in the quarterfinal played on Thursday, August 16.
First haf goals from Aitana Bonmatí Conca and Patri Guijarro gave Spain the lead and even though Peace Efih pulled one back it only turned out to be a consolation goal.
6. Alex Iwobi makes Nollywood debut
Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi announced on Friday through a post on his official Instagram account .
Iwobi portrays a Super hero character in the movie according to a short video clip posted on his page.
Pulse Sports gathered that Iwobi starred in the movie with veteran actress SomkeleIyamah and a stunt double was used to carry out his action requires scenes.
The 22-year-old took part in the movie while on extended break after his particpation with the Super Eagles at the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
7. FIFA reject visit of Solomon Dalung
World football governing body rejected the visit of Nigeria sports minister to the headquarter in Zurich.
FIFA made their opinion about the visit known in a letter revealed by ACLSports.com which stated that the minister had no business to visit.
Th message read, "Moreover, we would like to recall that one member of the proposed delegation, Mr Chris Giwa, is currently under a worldwide ban, in accordance with the decision of the FIFA Disciplinary Committee dated 10 January 2017 to extend the five—year ban from taking part in any kind of football-related activity imposed by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) Disciplinary Committee on 12 May 2016,” "
FIFA have already issued a warning to Nigeria to resolve issues surrounding its administration.
8. Aina, Ekong move to Italy
Super Eagles defenders Ola Aina and William Troost-Ekong both completed moves to Italian Serie A sides Torino and Udinese respectively.
Aina who was not part of the team to the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia was loaned out by parent club till the end of the 2018/19 season.
Ekong however completed a permanent move to Udinese from Turkey Super Lig side Bursaspor.
