We Figured Out the Marvel Characters With the Most MCU Appearances
Over the course of 11 years and more than 20 films ( Avengers: Endgame is the 22nd), we've seen characters show up time and time again in places where we might not expect. Someone who starts out in Thor might end up in Ant-Man, or vice-versa. We never really know, and that's why it can be nice to try to keep track of where, exactly, all these characters appear. Who's jumped around the most? Who's appeared the most times?
We're hoping to keep track of all of this for you here, charting who's shown up in the most MCU films, and continuing to track for the time being. Right now, we're counting appearances of all sorts of films to date, but not counting Avengers: Endgame appearances just yet-while we know that Tony, Cap, Hulk, and a few others are going to be around, given the end of Infinity War, it feels a little precarious to start totally counting our chickens before they hatch (though we can feel pretty confident we'll be seeing most of these characters again). Once the movie officially makes its way into our minds, we'll be sure to update the list entirely.
That being said, let's get this show on the road.
14. Agent Maria Hill + Hawkeye: 4 appearances
These two characters were introduced early on in the run (an uncredited appearance in Thor for Jeremy Renner, and the first Avengers for Cobie Smulders), and have remained consistent throughout. As Hawkeye, Renner has shown up in Thor, Avengers, Age of Ultron, and Civil War, and will be appearing in both Endgame and his own series on Disney+ . Hill has shown up in Avengers, Winter Soldier, and Infinity War, while she's also appeared on ABC's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., and is expected to show up in Endgame and Spider-Man: Far From Home.
12. Coulson: 5 appearances
Played by Clark Gregg , Agent Phil Coulson was one of the very first pieces of connective tissue in the Marvel Universe, showing up in Iron Man, Thor, Iron Man 2, and The Avengers, but not showing up again on the big screen (he's the lead character in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) until Captain Marvel.
11. Heimdall: 5 appearances
You almost forget that an actor of Idris Elba 's magnitude is even in the Marvel world when he's playing a character that's such a pure side player, but nonetheless he's made it worth it, showing up in all three Thor movies, along with Age of Ultron and Infinity War.
10. Falcon: 5 appearances
Anthony Mackie's Falcon might be Captain America's true sidekick, but he's been a constant player in the MCU since his introduction in Winter Soldier. Since, he's showed up in Age of Ultron, Civil War, a quick cameo in Ant-Man, and Infinity War. He's also going to be showing up in a Disney+ series, Falcon & Winter Soldier.
9. Loki: 5 appearances
The universe's best villain has managed to stick around through the years, becoming a sometimes-ally, and fan-favorite. Tom Hiddleston really made the role his own, and it's made it impossible for the franchise to ever really get rid of him. He's shown up as the main villain in both Thor and Avengers, while also showing up in Thor 2, Thor: Ragnarok, and Infinity War. Hiddleston will also star as Loki in his own Disney+ series.
8. Hulk: 5 appearances
While he hasn't had his own movie since 2008, back when he was played by Edward Norton, Mark Ruffalo has appeared as a side player in four other movies in the time since then. With all three Avengers movies thus far under his belt, in addition to Thor: Ragnarok, Mark Ruffalo has been an essential cog in the Marvel machine. He's due to play a big role in Endgame, and with any luck could continue appearing for years to come. Who doesn't want more RuffaloHulk?
7. Winter Soldier/Bucky Barnes: 6 appearances
Perhaps the most complex character in the Marvel Universe, Sebastian Stan has shown up in six different movies as friend-turned villain-turned friend Winter Soldier. He played key roles in all three Captain America movies, while also playing a part in Infinity War, and showing up for brief cameos in both Ant-Man and Black Panther. He's also due to appear in the Disney+ series Falcon & Winter Soldier
6. Black Widow: 6 appearances
It may feel like she's been part of the gang forever, but Scarlett Johansson first entered the MCU as superspy Natasha Romanoff, or Black Widow, in Iron Man 2. Since then, she's been one of the universe's most valuable chess pieces, showing up in The Avengers, Winter Soldier, Age of Ultron, Civil War, and Infinity War, while somehow never getting her own solo movie (though, thankfully, that's finally in production). She will be a key player in Endgame.
5. James Rhodes/War Machine: 7 appearances
Remember when this guy was played by Terrance Howard? Good times. Anyway, outside of the character's first appearance in the original Iron Man, Don Cheadle has really made this character his own, infusing his dynamic charisma into the character through appearances in Iron Man 2, Iron Man 3, Age of Ultron, Civil War, Infinity War and a quick cameo at the end of Captain Marvel.
4. Thor: 7 appearances
Now we start to really get into our stars. Thor is an essential piece to what makes the MCU tick, both in terms of in-universe power, and in Chris Hemsworth 's utter perfection in playing him, particularly in Ragnarok and Infinity War. He also showed up in Thor, Thor 2, Avengers, Age of Ultron, and made a cameo in Doctor Strange. We know that Thor has unfinished business with Thanos, and will play a key role on the team in Endgame.
3. Steve Rogers/Captain America: 8 appearances
One of the de facto leaders of the bunch, you could argue that no one's made more of an impression through the years than Chris Evans as this super-soldier who bleeds positivity. He's shown up in all three Captain America movies, all three Avengers movies, and made brief cameos in both Thor 2 and Spider-Man: Homecoming. He's of course a key player in Endgame, and we should be very, very worried about him .
2. Nick Fury: 9 appearances
Where Agent Coulson was the initial connective tissue of the MCU, Samuel L. Jackson 's Nick Fury is the lasting connective tissue. He's shown up not once, not twice, but NINE times throughout the course of the 22 films, and somehow that doesn't feel like enough. Let's recap: Fury has made his way into the story in Iron Man, Iron Man 2, Thor, the first two Captain America movies, all three Avengers movies, and most recently, Captain Marvel. He strangely doesn't have an IMDB credit as of right now for Endgame, but it would be surprising not to see him there in some capacity. He's going to show up in this summer's Spider-Man: Far From Home anyway, so we can feel good about Nick Fury continuing to wheel his way from story to story for years to come.
1.Tony Stark/Iron Man: 9 appearances
If we should be very, very worried about Captain America, I don't even know how to say how we should feel about Robert Downey Jr 's Tony Stark. He's the character who started it all, back in 2008's Iron Man, and has been a fixture ever since. It's hard to imagine anyone bringing as much to the role as RDJ has, and he's been the perfect fit, and a human metiphor for what Marvel has designed their movies to be: fun, breezy, but never too light to not believe in some heavy action.
*deep breath* Downey Jr has shown up as Tony Stark in all three Iron Man movies, all three Avengers movies, Civil War, Spider-Man: Homecoming, and a brief cameo in The Incredible Hulk. Without Iron Man there would be no MCU, and we know that. He's going to be a key piece-maybe *sniffling* for the last time-in Avengers: Endgame.
