According to US media reports, mounting financial commitments will soon force Oklahoma City's front office to make difficult roster decisions, with Serbian point guard Nikola Topic among those whose long-term future with the Thunder will come under careful evaluation.
Projections from ESPN front-office insider Bobby Marks suggest Oklahoma City could exceed the second luxury tax apron by as much as $26 million in the 2027-28 season. That scenario would trigger tax penalties in excess of $200 million on top of standard payroll obligations. For comparison, the franchise has paid roughly $108.8 million in total luxury tax penalties over the past two decades combined.
Along with Topic, who could become a restricted free agent ahead of the 2028-29 campaign, other young players like Jared McCain, Ajay Mitchell, and Jaylin Williams will also be in the spotlight. According to Forbes, the Thunder will need to clearly outline how much room they have in their budget and long-term plans for each of them.
However, this does not immediately signal an exit for Topic. US outlets point to potential trades involving experienced contributors like Alex Caruso or Isaiah Hartenstein as the first options to reduce costs while keeping the team's core intact.
For the young Serbian playmaker, the upcoming seasons will carry added weight, but also a tremendous opportunity to earn a pivotal role on the floor and prove he belongs in Oklahoma City's increasingly expensive puzzle.
