AFCON: Tunisian Head coach sacked after loss to Burkina Faso
Tunisia head coach Mondher Kebaier has been sacked by the Tunisian Football Association. Kebaier was sacked on Sunday, the day after the Carthage Eagles lost to Burkina Faso.
It was a poor Africa Cup of Nations for the 2004 champions with their only highlight a 1-0 win over the Super Eagles of Nigeria.
The Tunisians lost to Mali and tournament debutants the Gambia in their group games and could only qualify for the knockout round as one of the best third-placed teams.
In the statement released by the Tunisia FA, the body thanked Kebaier for his diligent service to his country.
“We thank Mondher Kebaier for the efforts he made during the period he spent at the helm of the national team, wishing him success in the rest of his coaching career.
"We also wish Jalal Al-Qadri success in his new duties.” the statement read.
The 51-year-old was in charge since August 2019 when he came in to replace Frenchman Alain Giresse, but will now be replaced by Jalal Al-Qadri.
Kebaier helped Tunisia to reach the Arab Cup final in Doha, Qatar in December 2021, before losing 2-0 after extra time against Algeria.
Their AFCON journey was ended in the quarter-final stage as they failed to get past a resilient Burkinabe side.
New coach Al-Qadri will be in charge of the team when they face Mali in the third round of the World Cup qualifiers on March 23.
