The managerial merry-go-round continues in Portuguese football, and this time a change is brewing in Liga 2.

According to information gathered by A BOLA, Sérgio Fonseca is on the verge of parting ways with Aves SAD. Talks are currently taking place between the manager and the club's board to terminate his contract, with an official announcement expected once terms are finalized.

Sérgio Fonseca took the reins at Aves SAD at the start of the current campaign, having guided Académico de Viseu to the top flight last season. At the helm of the Vila das Aves outfit, he has recorded two wins, three draws, and two defeats across seven Liga 2 fixtures. In the Taça de Portugal, the northern side have registered two wins in as many matches, knocking out Sintrense (2-0) and Moreirense (1-0). That cup triumph over Moreirense last Saturday followed a crucial 2-1 away victory against Penafiel, putting the team on a three-match unbeaten run—their best form of the 2026/27 season.

However, A BOLA can also reveal the leading contender to succeed Fonseca once his exit is finalized: Jorge Silas.

The 50-year-old former Portugal international is seen in Vila das Aves as the right man for the job, and the deal is expected to be wrapped up as soon as the formalities surrounding Fonseca's departure are completed.

Silas is currently without a club after managing Farense last season. His managerial resume also includes spells at UD Leiria, Marítimo, Mafra, AEL Limassol in Cyprus, Famalicão, B SAD, Sporting CP, and Belenenses. His next chapter now looks set to be at Aves SAD.

Aves SAD currently occupy 12th place in the Liga 2 table with 9 points. Their next fixture is scheduled for Sunday at 11:00 AM, when they host Tondela on matchday eight.
