The carmaker held this title for four years.

Unfortunately, things have changed for the auto company.

While Toyota's deliveries dropped from 2.3% to 2.46 million vehicles between January and March, Volkswagen's deliveries increased from 0.8% to 2.5 million vehicles.

Toyota's fall could also be attributed to production delays in Japan, caused by devastating earthquakes.

40% of it's global vehicles are manufactured in Japan, hence the huge impact.

The third overall sales spot goes to General Motors, with 2.36 million deliveries.
