Manchester United's disastrous season culminated in a painful 0-1 Europa League final defeat to Tottenham on Wednesday. The massive financial fallout has reportedly forced the Old Trafford hierarchy to put the entire squad up for sale, according to English media.

A season of nightmares and broken records ended in the worst possible way for Ruben Amorim's side. The final at San Mamés in Bilbao saw Manchester United miss out on their last chance for silverware, finishing the season trophyless. Adding to the misery, they finished 16th in the league, a staggering 44 points behind champions Liverpool.

Consequently, the Portuguese manager is understandably considering his position, despite having two years left on his contract. The real shock, however, comes from the Old Trafford boardroom. The Sun reports that owner Jim Ratcliffe has ordered every single player to be made available for transfer.

“Old Trafford chiefs had hoped to bank £100 million (120 million euros) from Champions League qualification next season. But the defeat to Spurs has necessitated the sale of several stars. Players like Bruno Fernandes, Casemiro, Kobbie Mainoo, Luke Shaw, Harry Maguire, Andre Onana, and Alejandro Garnacho could all be sold this summer,” the newspaper reveals.

Manchester United's share price has plummeted by 60% under Sir Jim Ratcliffe's ownership, and manager Ruben Amorim hinted even before last night's final that he might leave if he was no longer wanted.

The chaos at Old Trafford is further underlined by Bruno Fernandes' post-match reaction. The 30-year-old Portuguese playmaker issued a clear warning: "I've always been honest. I've always said I'll be here until the club tells me it's time to go. I want to do more and bring back the glory days. The day the club decides I'm surplus to requirements and it's time to part ways... that's football, you never know. But I've said it many times and I'll stick to my word. If the club feels it's time to get rid of some players because they want to make money or whatever, that's the situation. Football is like that sometimes, you have to accept it."

The 2025-2026 season will be only the second time in the last 35 years that Manchester United have failed to qualify for European competition. Under these circumstances, and especially given that owner Jim Ratcliffe has already implemented massive cost-cutting measures across the board, plans are being made with players who could potentially replace the high earners. "Lorenzo Lucca, Matteo Retegui, Moise Kean and Jean-Philippe Mateta are being considered as options."

United will have to permanently offload their expensive loanees to finance their summer dealings. Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Antony could all return to Old Trafford this summer after playing for Aston Villa, Chelsea and Real Betis respectively, and the club will reportedly listen to offers for all of them, according to The Sun.
