Tiago Torres, the reigning national champion, pulled off one of the biggest upsets at the Millennium Estoril Open, securing a spot in the quarterfinals after a commanding victory over Chile's Alejandro Tabilo, ranked 30th in the world. The 24-year-old Lisbon native, currently ranked 427th in the ATP hierarchy, triumphed with a double 6-4 in 1 hour and 32 minutes, marking his debut in a main circuit tournament.

Backed by an enthusiastic crowd chanting his name, Torres overcame an opponent seeded as the third favorite for the title. At the match's conclusion, the Ace Team player knelt on the court, visibly emotional about his achievement. This victory, coupled with his win in the opening round against Basilashvili, solidifies a memorable performance.

"I grew up watching this tournament. To be able to play in it is a dream come true, and to be in the quarterfinals... It's unforgettable and thrilling. I'm ecstatic," Tiago Torres confessed after the match. The tennis player admitted that the crowd's support was crucial: "Today I managed to put all the ingredients together to play the best match of my life. The crowd helped a lot," he said happily.

Statistically, the Portuguese left-hander served seven aces and, despite committing seven double faults, managed to save seven of the eight break points he faced, breaking the South American's serve on three occasions.

With this result, Tiago Torres joins an exclusive group of Portuguese tennis players who have reached the quarterfinals on home soil, including João Sousa, João Domingues, Nuno Borges, Rui Machado, and Gastão Elias. His next opponent will be France's Hugo Gaston, ranked 109th in the ATP.

The tennis player, who is still seeking his first international title on the ITF circuit, reflected on his recent progress. "Three weeks ago I was playing a Futures event and lost in the final. Two weeks ago I lost in the semifinals, and today I beat a top-30 player. Hard work pays off," he stated, emphasizing that this is "the best result" of his life. His performance at the Estoril Open has already guaranteed him a climb of 97 places in the rankings, to 330th position.

Furthermore, his presence in the quarterfinals already guarantees him 18,515 euros, and according to the ATP website, he had accumulated 48,339 euros throughout his entire career until today.

"The week before, I thought that, with luck, I might play in the qualifiers, and right now I'm in the quarterfinals. It's good to have a day to rest and understand what's happening, because I can't even grasp it yet. So, it's good to digest everything tomorrow and, on Friday, give my best again to try and bring more joy to this crowd that came to see me," said the tennis player, who studied in the United States and was almost unknown in national tennis.

He has now become the fourth Portuguese player to reach the quarterfinals of the only Portuguese ATP tournament since 2015, when it changed organization. "On Monday, I had about 500 messages; today I'll have another 500. I apologize to everyone I can't respond to, but I also need some time for myself, to be honest. But, I'll continue to be myself. Next week I'll be playing tournaments at my level again [Futures], so nothing will change," he affirmed.

And to cap off a beautiful day, Tiago Torres also triumphed in doubles, alongside João Domingues, an unexpected pairing that was reinstated after Burruchaga withdrew. Undeterred by their higher-ranked compatriots, Henrique Rocha and Jaime Faria, Torres and Domingues won 2-1 (1-6, 6-3, and 10-8).
