Co-founder of the International Society of Olympic Historians, Bill Mallon said two hundred sets of twins have competed at the Olympic Games and certified the Luiks as the first triplets.

According to New York Times, the International Olympic Committee could not dispute that although it did not track siblings.

The Luik sister just started running seriously six years ago when they were 24.

With each nation permitted a maximum of three athletes in each Olympic marathon, the Luik sisters have taken the three spots for Estonia.

For the Olympic Games in Rio, the sisters could be running together or against each other.

Their coach, Harry Lemberg revealed the strategy they will use.  Liina, who is in the best form will run ahead while Leila and Lily run behind.

“It’s amazing that they will go to the Olympics in the same event,” Lemberg who coaches the Luik triplets told New York Times.

The sisters were born in 1985 and became so active from a young age that their grandmother would tell their mother, “These girls don’t know how to walk; they just run.”

“We had to fight to survive when we were born,” Lily said.

Their mother however, Lea Luik put the girls in music lessons, preferring that they play the piano, the cello and the violin instead of sports.

They became professional hip-hop and show dancers after high school, taught dance lessons and appeared in a music video.

It was a colleague that suggested that they try competitive running which led them to hire a coach in 2010.
