The Beauty of Brian Brobbey's World Cup Goal Explained: 'As if they were Youth Players'

Brian Brobbey was the hero of the day for Oranje. In just over fifteen minutes, he put the Netherlands up 2-0 against Sweden. Koeman gave him his first start in a major tournament, and Brobbey repaid that trust handsomely. His first goal, in particular, generated much enthusiasm. "The beauty was primarily in the outside of his right foot."

In the Sportnieuws.nl World Cup Football Podcast, the panel can't stop talking about Brian Brobbey's performance for Oranje. His inclusion in the starting lineup was somewhat surprising, but he quickly showed why, scoring the opening goal after just five minutes. "That goal is exactly why you want Brobbey in the team," remarked Oranje-watcher Rick Kraaijeveld. "There was a long ball from the defense, he beautifully laid it off to Reijnders, and then continued his run to score himself."

Brobbey's Quality

Maaskant also savored that first goal, finding its beauty in a small detail. "This was a perfectly executed attack," he commented. "The beauty was primarily in the layoff to Reijnders. With the outside of his right foot, a bit half-volley. Then to make that sprint, that's where Brobbey's strength truly shines."

Seuntjens noted Brobbey's significant development at Sunderland compared to his time at Ajax. "You could question what happened at Ajax, but there's no doubt he's made immense progress in the Premier League. He's incredibly strong, and even in the Premier League, he shrugs off central defenders as if they were youth players."

What to do with Malen?

However, the question remains: what about Malen? The AS Roma striker was preferred up front at the start of the World Cup period, but now seems to have been overtaken by Brobbey. He played on the right wing, but Crysencio Summerville is knocking on the door for that position. "I think he just wants to play. On the right, he's more in his natural position. He can perform well there, but he does face competition," Maaskant believes.

And that competition is a good thing, according to the former coach. The fact that various players in the attack are vying for a starting spot only benefits the team. "You also have to function as a team, but at the same time, there's an internal competitive struggle that keeps everyone sharp. As a player, you need to be sharp at that tournament; you always want to play. You'll see that hunger in training too," Maaskant assured.
