Teofimo Lopez is now a world champion in three different weight classes.
On Saturday night, Lopez moved up to the super lightweight division to challenge his friend Rolly Romero for the World Boxing Association title at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. After 12 rounds, Lopez emerged victorious via a split decision, claiming Romero's belt.
Long-time friends, Lopez and Romero appeared to have a strained relationship leading up to the fight, leaving many to wonder what kind of battle they would deliver. Ultimately, however, the clash resembled more of a sparring session between pals than a world title bout.
For the majority of the 12 rounds, Lopez relied on a high volume of punches, utilizing his hand speed and technique to outmaneuver Romero with jabs and body shots. Romero, on the other hand, spent much of the fight waiting, searching for an opportunity to land a powerful counterpunch that could turn the tide of the contest.
In the fifth round, Romero finally got his chance, landing a left hook as Lopez came in, visibly shaking him. However, Lopez managed to survive the dangerous moment and finish the round. This could have been a turning point for Romero, but instead, he reverted to his passive style in the subsequent round and was convincingly outboxed for the remainder of the fight.
Ultimately, Lopez won on points, although, as often happens in boxing, one of the judges scored it a draw. Thus, Lopez's victory came by way of a split decision.
