Tottenham secured a London derby victory in front of over 80,000 spectators in Sydney, Australia. The Spurs triumphed 2-1 in a pre-season friendly, despite playing much of the second half with ten men. Kevin Danso, who came on at halftime, received a red card in the 48th minute. Both teams exchanged goals in the first half, with Sandro Tonali and Estevao finding the net. Richarlison scored the winning goal in the 91st minute.
20-year-old Archie Gray captained Tottenham. New signing Matheus Fernandes was not in the squad, nor was James Maddison, but summer arrivals Tonali, Robertson, and Van Hecke featured. Xabi Alonso, meanwhile, fielded most of his available key players, with Cole Palmer and João Pedro starting.
After a cautious start, tensions rose following a late challenge by Conor Gallagher on Esugo, sparking a confrontation between players from both teams. In the 17th minute, Tonali scored his first goal for the Spurs. He received the ball from Solomon and struck from distance, with the shot deflecting off Colwill and leaving the goalkeeper with no chance. However, Chelsea responded quickly, equalizing four minutes later. Bergvall lost possession, allowing Palmer to set up Gittens on the left wing. He crossed to the far post, and Estevao headed home.
The match was evenly contested with chances at both ends. Tel shot over the bar from a good position, while João Pedro missed an opportunity for Chelsea. The tempo dropped towards the end of the first half. Shortly after the break, Kevin Danso, who had come on just three minutes earlier, was sent off. He brought down João Pedro, who was through on goal. With a man advantage, Xabi Alonso's side gained the upper hand and pressed for a period. Kinski made an excellent save from an Estevao shot.
Gradually, the game settled back into a training-like rhythm. Towards the end, however, Tottenham created better opportunities. In the 84th minute, Rio Rierematten made an excellent run and shot, with the ball hitting the post. Chelsea pushed for a winner, but their opponents managed to thwart their attacks. In added time, Jamie Donley struck from distance, the ball rebounded off the post and fell to Richarlison, who tapped it into the net.
