Special Adviser to the Sports Ministers, Solomon Dalung revealed that the Federal Government plan to properly honour the late Keshi after the Olympic Games in Rio.

“We don’t want a haphazard burial for such a great patriot, that is why the minister of sports, Solomon Dalung, has said the FG will play its own part after the Olympics”, Nneka Ikem Anibeze is quoted to say by African Sports.

“We will unveil details after the games.”

The family of Keshi is however going ahead with their funeral plans of the former Super Eagles coach.

Final burial rites for the 54-year-old will begin on Thursday, July 26 in Benin City with a church service at St’ Paul Catholic Church, Benin City by 9am.

A novelty match organised by Austin Eguavoen will hold at Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin which would be followed by his body lying in state for fans to pay their last respect.

Keshi’s body will then be moved to Asaba, Delta State capital for a lying in state at the Stephen Keshi Stadium at Nnebisi Road.

From Asaba, the body will leave for Illah, his hometown where it will be received by the Obi of Illah, HRH Obi Gbemudu along with his high chiefs.

A requiem mass will also hold in Keshi's honour at the St’ John, the Evangelist Catholic Church before his interment.

The former Super Eagles coach who won the African Cup of Nations as a player and manager was at his family house in Benin when he died.

The former defender, Pulse Sports learnt was scheduled to return to his base in the United States later in the day.

According to a statement by the family spokesperson Emmanuel Ado, Keshi has been in the country since the funeral of his wife, Nkem Kate Keshi who died in December 2015.

His death comes six months after his wife of 33 years, Kate, died in December, 2015 after a long battle with cancer.
