Stan Wawrinka was still finding his French Open triumph hard to believe after he put a difficult start to the year behind him with victory on Sunday.

The Swiss claimed his second grand slam title with a 4-6 6-4 6-3 6-4 win over world number one Novak Djokovic in the final at Roland Garros.

It had been a hard few months for Wawrinka, who was playing below his best and going through a divorce.

Wawrinka was still struggling to come to terms with his success after his win, not one he expected after a last-16 exit in Monte Carlo.

"It's important when you are an athlete that you can put your mind 100 per cent on what you are doing," he said.

"You have to have some sacrifices, you have to work hard, you have to be relaxed in your mind when you are practising and you have to give everything.

"You have to try very hard to focus on what you are doing and that's what I did so well since after Monaco.

"I find the balance between when I am on the court, when I am talking tennis, doing tennis, I am doing it 100 per cent without anything outside.

"I'm still surprised that in two months I can win the French Open as I wasn't in good shape after Monaco.

"It was a tough, tough, moment for me and to say that now I won the French Open is something completely crazy."

Wawrinka was unwilling to compare his win to his previous grand slam victory at the 2014 Australian Open.

The 30-year-old said he was surprised by his own "amazing" performance.

"For me this one is really special, for sure," Wawrinka said.

"Playing Novak, in the final, the number one player, winning almost everything since the beginning of the year and especially the way I played, the way I finished the match, the way I was focused all the match, the way I changed the momentum.

"At the beginning, it's always the same when I play Novak. The player who stays on the baseline and tries to dictate always make the other uncomfortable.

"He was playing well, he was fresh, it was windy, not easy, but I know with me it can change quickly. I know how to do it.

"I was trying to have longer rallies, play deeper, play more aggressive from the baseline and little by little I started to be the player inside the court and that's the way to play if I'm to beat him.

"I'm still surprised the way I played because I think I played amazing today and I was really nervous but I didn't really shirk [anything].

"I was always going for my shots, always going for the right play and I am really happy with the trophy tonight."
