Sporting Transfer Market: Diomande Deal Slowed by Familiar Greek Figure

Billionaire Evangelos Marinakis, Nottingham Forest's majority shareholder, is known for his extravagant negotiating style. A year ago, Jota Silva's move fell through by minutes after lengthy talks.

Ousmane Diomande's potential move to Nottingham Forest is reportedly stalled, with Sporting demanding no less than €40 million upfront. The Portuguese club is also pushing for additional bonuses that could inflate the transfer fee to €45 million, plus a 10 percent sell-on clause for any future profit. Forest, however, is attempting to lower the fixed fee. This protracted negotiation is partly attributed to Evangelos Marinakis, the Greek billionaire owner of Forest, whose negotiating style famously scuppered Jota Silva's move to Alvalade last summer, with the deal collapsing just minutes before the transfer window closed.

Discussions for the 22-year-old central defender continue, albeit at a slower pace. This is despite a good relationship between Sporting's general director, Bernardo Morais Palmeiro, and Marinakis, stemming from Palmeiro's time at Rio Ave, another club within Marinakis's football empire, which also includes Forest and Olympiacos.

Negotiations are ongoing, but it's uncertain if a resolution will be reached before Friday. Coincidentally, that's when Sporting is set to face Nottingham Forest in a pre-season friendly at the Algarve Stadium at 7:45 PM. This match will be Sporting's final warm-up before their league opener on August 8th against Estrela da Amadora at Reboleira, scheduled for 8:30 PM.

Sporting acquired Diomande in 2023 from Midtjylland, who had loaned him to Mafra in the second division. The initial cost for the defender was €7.5 million, with an additional €5 million in performance-related bonuses. These variable payments were structured into three installments of €1.66 million, triggered after 30, 60, and 90 official appearances (each with at least 45 minutes played), with the final payment made at the start of last season.

In total, Sporting's investment in the Ivorian international amounted to €14.5 million. This figure includes an additional €2 million paid by Sporting to acquire half of Midtjylland's 20% sell-on clause, reducing the Danish club's share to 10%. Given the strong interest from English football, this investment reflects the success of Sporting's gamble on a player scouted from the second tier. With this potential transfer, the Sporting SAD stands to secure a capital gain of €25.5 million, of which 10% (€2.55 million) will go to the Danish club.
