South Africa to face Super Falcons in AWCON 2018 final after 2-0 win over Mali in semis
The
Thembi Kgatlana and Lebohang Ramalepe scored in either half to also seal qualification to the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup for South Africa.
The Bayana Bayana have had a good run at the AWCON 2018 so far and finished top of Group B above the Super Falcons.
2-0 win
They started well against Mali as captain Janine van Wyk was the first to threaten Mali's goal with a long-range free-kick in the opening minutes.
Mali goalkeeper Adoudou Konate was however not troubled.
Kgatlana gave South Africa the lead in the 31st minute, capitalising on a poor clearance by a Malian defender to fire home her fifth of the tournament.
Bayana controlled the game and got their second in the 81st minute through Ramalepe who beat Konate with a long-range shot.
Vs Nigeria
South Africa will now face Nigeria again after beating the Super Falcons 1-0 in the group stage. This will also be the fourth time South Africa are reaching the final.
South Africa have met Nigeria in an AWCON final before, losing 2-0 in the 2000 final. They have also lost on all their appearances in the final.
Meanwhile, Cameroon will face Mali in the third-place match on Friday that will also determine the third African representative for the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup in France.
