Ethiopians Suntayahu Legese and Dinke Meseret emerged winners of the male and female events of the 2019 Access Bank Lagos City Marathon held on Saturday, February 2.

Since the inception of the annual marathon festival no Nigerian has emerged winner, now in its fourth edition.

The tournament witnessed a total of 20,000 participants in the male and female events.

The 2019 Access Bank Lagos City Marathon is a competition sanctioned by the Athletics governing body IAAF in partnership with the Lagos State government.

In the male category Legese became the first Ethiopian to win with a time of 02:17:28hrs to beat all-time record replacing Abraham Kiprotich who won in 2018

Joshua Kipkorir and William Yegon joined Legese on the podium finishing second and third respectively.

Governor Akinwumi Ambode, Group Managing Director of Access Bank Herbert Wigwe, Sintayehu Legese of Ethiopia (m) is the winner while Kenyan duo, Joshua Kipkorir ($40,000) and William Yegon finished second ($40,000) and third ($30,000) respectively in the men’s event.

Kipkorir with a time of 02:18:16hrs and his Kenyan compatriot Yegon came third with a time of 02:19:04hrs.

Meseret wins female event

In the women's category Meseret emerged winner with a time of 02:48:02hrs, while Alemnesh Herepa who won in 2018 came in second with a time of 02:49:05hrs and Kebena Chala claimed the last podium spot with a time of 02:49:09hrs.

The best time Nigerians in the competition came in sixth place overall in the men's and women's competition.

Sunday Manasa recorded Nigeria's best time in the men's event with a time of 02:21:11hrs, while Deborah Pam was Nigeria’s best performer in the female event with a time of 02:52:59hrs,

Monetary incentives was given to the top three Nigerians in each category earning N3 million, N2 million and N1 million respectively.

While the winners of the competition were rewarded with $50,000 for the winner while second and third place received $40,000 and $30,000 respectively.
