Former world number one Simona Halep didn't miss a beat in responding to Nick Kyrgios after the Australian tennis player revealed a positive cocaine doping test. Her reaction comes after Kyrgios harshly criticized Halep during the Romanian's doping suspension in 2023.
Kyrgios, 31, announced his provisional suspension after a sample collected on June 22, during a tournament in Mallorca, tested positive for benzoylecgonine, a substance found in cocaine. The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) confirmed the mandatory provisional suspension, effective since August 4. As a result, the Australian is barred from playing, training, or appearing at any professional tournament, including Grand Slams.
Nick Kyrgios has always been a vocal opponent of banned substances in tennis, frequently attacking other athletes in similar situations. One of his targets was indeed Simona Halep, whom he called a "potato" while she served a sanction for an anti-doping rule violation last year.
Now, the tables have turned. Following Kyrgios's confession, Halep took to social media to deliver several messages. In an Instagram post, she shared a photo of a Coca-Cola bottle and a bunch of bananas, a clear jab at the Australian. Later, she wrote: "Never attack someone when they are down. Life has a strange way of switching positions and an even stranger way of revealing the difference between an accident and a choice."
For his part, Nick Kyrgios took responsibility for the incident in a public statement. "I wanted you to hear this from me first. I recently failed a drug test in Mallorca, after testing positive for cocaine," he began.
"I made a huge mistake and I take full responsibility for it. I apologize to my fans, my family, my sponsors, and everyone close to me. Most of all, I apologize to the children who look up to me. I know the example this sets, and I am deeply disappointed in myself."
The tennis player also added some context, mentioning the physical and mental impact of injuries in recent years, but emphasized: "None of that excuses what I did." Kyrgios revealed that the incident served as a "wake-up call" and that he would be stepping away from social media and public life for 28 days to "get himself together," asking for respect for his and his family's privacy. "I apologize. I will work hard and come back better," he concluded.
