The main event at UFC Vegas 121 delivered one of the year's best fights, but concluded with unsettling scenes.
Raul Rosas Jr. and Raoni Barcelos headlined a UFC Fight Night for the first time on Saturday at the Meta APEX. After four spectacular rounds, the bout ended in the fifth when Rosas secured a takedown, and Barcelos subsequently lost consciousness, his body going limp.
The initial two rounds were packed with action. Rosas started aggressively, throwing everything he had at his experienced opponent. Barcelos gradually closed the distance, and in the second round, he capitalized on his momentum, landing nearly 60 significant strikes. Rosas visibly began to slow down.
The third round was a closely contested affair. Barcelos executed an impressive trip takedown, gaining a dominant position behind his opponent. However, Rosas managed to reverse the situation, establish top control, and land several effective ground strikes. Barcelos, undeterred, got back to his feet and continued to inflict damage and fatigue on Rosas.
The fourth round was entirely dictated by Barcelos. He subjected Rosas to a brutal beating both on the feet and on the ground, coming close to finishing the fight on several occasions. In the fifth round, however, Rosas, knowing he needed an early victory, poured all his energy into offense and secured the takedown that brought the match to an end.
Even after multiple replays, it was difficult to pinpoint exactly what led to Barcelos losing consciousness. He was ultimately stretchered out of the arena.
Following his victory, Rosas praised Barcelos's resilience, called for a performance bonus, and stated his desire to face a top-seven ranked opponent next.
