The Thunder comfortably handled the Nuggets with a 96-84 victory on Friday.
Gilgeous-Alexander finished the game with 17 points, putting an end to an astonishing, record-breaking streak of 141 consecutive games scoring at least 20 points.
The last time he failed to reach that threshold was on October 30, 2024.
With just under two minutes remaining, he needed only three points to extend his historic run. However, with Oklahoma City holding a commanding 93-76 lead with 1:43 left, he asked his coach to sub him out.
"I was about to go back in, but then I saw the Nuggets had made substitutions, so I felt we should match that. You always have to respect the game," Gilgeous-Alexander said.
Head coach Mark Daigneault was willing to leave him on the floor to keep the streak alive, but he applauded his superstar's selflessness.
"I think it shows his character and his perspective on things. He asked to come out on his own. Among the many things I admire about him, that is right near the top."
Oklahoma City has two wins on the season and will face the Los Angeles Clippers in their next matchup.
