France international and Arsenal defender William Saliba has reportedly avoided back surgery for a chronic injury that sidelined him from the World Cup semi-final against Spain (0-2), according to French newspaper "L'Equipe". It was previously revealed that he had been playing with pain-killing injections at the World Cup due to a back fracture sustained two months prior in a Premier League match.
"I've been in pain for some time. But I had to grit my teeth for the Champions League and the Premier League. The medical staff are handling it well. The World Cup comes once every four years, and I had to grit my teeth again," Saliba admitted at a press conference during the tournament.
However, Saliba faces a lengthy period of conservative treatment, requiring complete rest for several months. The diagnosis is final and was confirmed by Arsenal's medical team.
