Melbourne Rebels man Smith was a surprise inclusion in the 31-man selection named by coach Michael Cheika on Friday.

The 26-year-old may make his Test debut against United States on September 5, with the World Cup starting 13 days later.

Foley said the call-up came as a huge shock.

"I can't believe it to be honest," he told Omnisport.

"I'm just looking forward to getting stuck into the training and doing everything I can to be ready to go on the field."

Smith said the Wallabies squad had been "real welcoming" and he had already started learning from his experienced team-mates.

He felt he was no chance of making the World Cup squad early in the year.

"To be honest, a couple of months ago, not at all," Smith said.

"I thought it'd be pretty tough to make the squad obviously but lately I thought more I might have a chance just doing everything I can and to get picked is just an awesome feeling."
