Having started Friday six shots behind the leader, the world number one - a winner on two of his last three starts - soon fell further off the pace courtesy of bogeys on the third and sixth holes.

A birdie at eight lifted his spirits, but McIlroy then carded four bogeys on the back nine together with a double-bogey six on 11 as he posted a 78.
