Ronald Koeman Addresses Ailing Wife Bartina After Oranje Departure: 'That Shows Strength'

Ronald Koeman is stepping down as head coach of the Dutch national team. A day after the painful World Cup elimination against Morocco and a storm of criticism regarding his performance, the coach decided to call it quits himself. In his farewell message, he opens up about the challenging years dealing with his wife Bartina's health.

Bartina, Koeman's wife, was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2010. Eight years later, the disease returned and was found to have metastasized. She recently revealed that she is still undergoing intensive treatments, including chemotherapy and immunotherapy. This prevented her from accompanying Koeman to the United States for the World Cup, which ultimately ended in significant disappointment for the Dutch national team.

Koeman Addresses Bartina

In his farewell message, Koeman addresses his seriously ill wife. "The past few years have once again made me realize that there are more important things than football. Football has been my life, but health is priceless," he stated. "When someone you love dearly is fighting a tough battle, your perspective changes."

According to the departing coach, he never felt hindered by his wife. "Despite her own illness, she supported and encouraged me every day to complete my work as national coach. That speaks volumes about her incredible strength. I am more grateful to her than I will ever be able to express in words," he concluded in the message shared via his official social media channels.
