Referees' Committee on Arda Güler: No conclusive evidence – VAR cannot intervene
A controversial incident involving an alleged elbow by Arda Güler on Peque during the first half of Real Madrid's clash with Sevilla at 0-0 sparked furious reactions from the Andalusian side. The visitors were left outraged that the Turkish international was not shown a straight red card, putting both the VAR officials and the broadcast host company, Global Football Production (GFP), under heavy scrutiny.
La Liga sources clarified why there was no definitive close-up angle of the disputed clash, despite 23 cameras covering the match. The incident was captured only by the widest-angle lenses—the behind-the-goal camera, the Skycam, and the offside cameras. The league insisted it was not a directorial oversight, but simply an absence of detailed footage. The exact feed broadcast on television was the very same feed available to the VAR official at the Bernabéu, Cuadra Fernández.
The Referees' Technical Committee also weighed in to clarify the situation:
"Of all the cameras in the stadium, not every single one is suitable for VAR review. The action took place behind the referee's back and off the ball. The cameras were not trained on that specific area, apart from those with an ultra-wide field of view. The incident is visible, but lacks sufficient detail. It is impossible to determine whether the contact was with the shoulder, elbow, palm, or in the face. Without irrefutable evidence, there can be no intervention. No foul was called on the pitch, and without conclusive footage, VAR has no authority to step in."
Global Football Production took over the league's audiovisual production last season, succeeding Mediapro. The company is a joint venture between HBS (production) and Italian tech firm NVP (technical operations) and holds a five-year contract with La Liga running through the 2029/30 campaign.
