Referee-VAR Dialogue Revealed for Overturned Red Card in Atlético - Barcelona Clash (vid)
Barcelona secured a crucial victory on Saturday night (April 4th), defeating Atlético Madrid 2-1 at the Metropolitano. This result marks a decisive step in their pursuit of the La Liga title.
However, the match was marred by a controversial incident that has sparked intense debate across Spain. Shortly after the start of the second half, referee Mateo Busquets issued a straight red card to Barcelona defender Gerard Martín for stepping on Almada's ankle, after Martín had already cleared the ball.
Following a VAR review, Busquets overturned his decision, downgrading the red card to a yellow for the Hansi Flick player, at a point when the score was 1-1. To clarify the situation, the Spanish Football Federation released the dialogue that took place.
According to the rules, if a player's foot follows a natural movement after contact with the ball, the tackle may be deemed unintentional and not warrant a sending-off. This was precisely the discussion between the match referee and Melero López in the VAR booth.
"Mateo, I recommend you review the incident to assess a possible retraction of the red card you showed, please," was the initial communication from VAR.
"In my opinion, it's a play where the Barcelona player plays the ball normally, a natural movement in the game, and then contact with the Atlético player happens naturally," the dialogue continued.
"Okay, the Barcelona player has control, plays the ball, and then steps on him; it's a natural dynamic movement. I will cancel the red and show him a yellow card, alright?" Busquets concluded, with VAR responding: "Correct, I agree."
