The reason behind the accidental scheduling of a press conference for LeBron James's unveiling by the Miami Heat has been revealed. A Heat employee mistakenly published a live stream for a LeBron James press conference while preparing content before going on leave. Ultimately, however, James signed with the Philadelphia 76ers.
According to ESPN journalist Ramona Shelburne, the responsible Heat employee was preparing for an upcoming vacation and was trying to get ahead on work that might arise if James chose to return to Miami.
"Sources told ESPN that the employee had planned vacation for this week and was trying to get ahead of work that would come up if James did choose the Heat," Shelburne reported.
The explanation reportedly amused James's long-time agent, Rich Paul, as well as the small group of people the four-time NBA champion trusted during his decision-making process.
The confusion began when a live stream titled "LeBron James Introductory Press Conference" briefly appeared on the Heat's official YouTube channel.
The press conference was scheduled for July 27, leading fans to believe that Miami had accidentally revealed James's destination before he announced his decision.
The link was quickly removed after screenshots began circulating on social media.
However, the scheduled event was not based on inside information that LeBron had chosen Miami.
Instead, the employee was creating materials in advance so the organization would be prepared if James signed with the Heat.
Subsequently, a team spokesperson confirmed that the live stream was published by mistake while Miami's social media department was preparing for that possibility.
The premature upload ultimately proved moot, as James announced he would sign with the Philadelphia 76ers for his 24th NBA season.
The 41-year-old chose Philadelphia over other interested teams, including Miami, Cleveland, and Golden State, in pursuit of a fifth NBA championship title.
LeBron described the move as his "final decision" and stated that his priority was to contend for another title, not to maximize his salary.
Thus, Miami, from a team that seemed to have accidentally leaked James's return, became a witness to him beginning the final chapter of his career with an Eastern Conference rival.
