Spanish club Real Sociedad has announced a contract extension for head coach Pellegrino Matarazzo, keeping him at the helm until the end of the 2027/28 season.
The 48-year-old American earned this reward after leading the team to a Copa del Rey triumph in his initial months, becoming the first American coach to win a major trophy with a club from Europe's top five leagues. The penalty shootout victory over Atlético Madrid in the final also secured Real Sociedad a spot in next season's Europa League.
Matarazzo took charge of the Basque club in December when they were still battling relegation from the Spanish top flight. Ultimately, he guided the team to a respectable 10th-place finish by the end of the campaign.
"I've connected very well with the people of Gipuzkoa, with the players, with everyone at the club. We share similar values, which makes it easier to bond," Matarazzo stated in an announcement quoted on the club's official website.
Real Sociedad will kick off their La Liga season on August 17 with an away fixture against Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabéu.
