Qatar are the hosts of the first World Cup in the Middle East and they have been rewarded with a difficult group. However, one thing they have working in their favour is being an unknown quantity. It is hard to know what we should expect from the host nation and that unpredictability could be a contributing factor on their quest for success.

Qatar’s World Cup Qualification

Qatar qualified for the World Cup by virtue of being the host nation. A controversial decision that cuts across several issues, including alleged human rights violations. One thing was certain, that they would be a participant at this event and more importantly, kick off the tournament in front of their home fans.

Qatar’s World Cup performances

Hosts, Qatar, have never qualified for the FIFA World Cup since the country's independence in 1971. Although the country has been a regular participant in the AFC Asian Cup, this will be the first time the national side will be appearing at a World Cup.
