These are five things we learnt from matchday 16

1. Manchester City are runaway leaders

Manchester United were the closest challengers to Manchester City for the Premier League title but a 2-1 loss to the Citizens ahome has ruled out the Red Devils from the title race. But it is not the win and the 11-point advantage of Manchester City, it was the manner with which they did it.

Manchester City came to Old Trafford and just like they did at Stamford Bridge, dominated from start to finish. Early days but Manchester City are far the best side in England and with an 11-point lead at this point, it’s hard to see them not lifting the trophy in May 2018.

2. Mourinho has been let down by his players

Jose Mourinho is a serial winner, a manager who has delivered titles everywhere he worked and at Manchester United, his League Cup and Europa League titles in his first season show he’s still the man. But his players have let him down this season so far.

Mourinho has been criticised for his conservative approach at Manchester United, but that is not why he’s losing the league to Manchester City. His players have failed him. Against Manchester City, Mourinho’s men were let down by a couple of silly mistakes at the back which allowed City to score.

When City win the title in May 2018, it won't be because Mourinho lost the tactical battle to Pep, his players have let him down.

3. Klopp stubbornness holding back Liverpool

Liverpool were Liverpool against Everton on matchday 16, brilliant in attack but shabby in defence. This is the story that has defined Liverpool’s season so far.

With a brilliant front-four of Sadio Mane, Philippe Coutinho, Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah, Jürgen Klopp has one of the best attacks in world football. But the frailties which he has failed to address in his defence has haunted his team all season.

He continues to insist there is no problem in his defence but if he doesn’t fix it, he will have only himself to blame.

4. Normalcy has returned to Chelsea

With the impressive set-up of Antonio Conte last season, Chelsea ran away with the Premier League title. A 1-0 loss away at West Ham ended any hopes of a consecutive Premier League title and it’s clearly no one’s fault.

Other managers have caught up with Conte’s three man-defence set-up and there weren’t major improvement to the squad that won the title last season.

Chelsea this season are not failing, they aren’t just overachieving like last season. They are now playing at their level.

5. Salah a huge contender for Player of the Year

The buzz in the summer was on three prolific strikers in the Premier League, Romelu Lukaku, Alvaro Morata and Alexandre Lacazette but it is Salah who has really caught the eye for Liverpool.

13 goals now and three assists, scoring every 92 minutes in the Premier League. Brilliant for a player that arrived without much fanfare.

Almost half-way through the season and he’s a huge contender for player of the Year.
