Portugal Kicks Off European Championship with Defeat

The national team was swept in three sets by Poland (25-12, 25-18, and 25-20), who are defending their title won two years ago. This Friday, the Portuguese will play again (5 PM), this time against Bulgaria, the world vice-champions and hosts.

The squad, led by former international João José, started sluggishly, allowing Poland – the reigning European champions and this year's Nations League winners – to dominate the scoreboard and swiftly close out the first set 25-12.

In the second set, despite the 25-18 scoreline, Portugal put up a much stronger fight against the Paris 2024 Olympic silver medalists. However, it wasn't enough to halt one of the tournament favorites, as the Portuguese team struggled significantly at the net and with their serve.

The third set saw the Portuguese players battling hard to stay in contention and force a fourth set in their opening Pool B encounter. Yet, the experience and technical prowess of their rivals ultimately proved decisive, sealing the 3-0 victory (25-20). This outcome was met with frustration from players like Lourenço Martins, who is competing in his fourth consecutive European Championship.

Should Portugal finish among the top four teams in their group, they will advance to the Round of 16, where they would face a team from Group D, which includes Romania, Latvia, France, Germany, Turkey, and Switzerland.

This marks Portugal's eighth appearance in a European Championship final phase, and their fourth in a row. Their best historical performances came by invitation in 1948 (Italy), where they finished fourth, and 1951 (France), securing seventh place (with a smaller number of participating teams).

After a long hiatus, Portugal returned to the European Championship finals in 2005, finishing 10th. Subsequent appearances saw them place 14th in 2011, 20th in 2019, 15th in 2021, and 10th in 2023, with the last three editions featuring 24 participating nations.
