The Portuguese athlete, who hadn't competed since the Tokyo World Championships in September, achieved his best jump on his second attempt. This mark served as an immediate response to Jamaica's Jordan Scott, who, just moments before on his first try, had set a new personal best of 17.69 meters, temporarily taking the annual lead.

The podium was completed by Algeria's Yasser Mohammed Triki, who, with a jump of 17.67 meters on his fourth attempt, established a new national record for Algeria. Meanwhile, Italy's Andrea Dallavalle finished in fourth place, with his best mark being 17.19 meters, achieved on his fifth attempt.

The 32-year-old Portuguese athlete, born in Cuba, was an Olympic champion at Tokyo2020 and a silver medalist at Paris2024. He also became world champion in Eugene (United States) in 2022 and in Tokyo in 2025, where he notably surpassed Dallavalle on his final attempt with a jump of 17.91 meters.
