Midfielder now Liverpool’s highest paid player in club history

The Brazilian join The Reds in 2012 from Inter Milan and has become a key figure in Jurgen Klopp’s side.

Liverpool secured the contract extension of the 24-year-old star amidst strong interest from La Liga giants, Barcelona.

This new contract, however, does not guarantee Liverpool of the stay of the Brazilian player.

Former striker Luis Suarez signed a long-term Liverpool deal in December 2013 but left to join Barcelona just seven months later.

There is, however, reasons to be hopeful in Coutinho’s case as his high wage means that a move to Barcelona will most likely take a pay cut.

Suarez also moved to Barcelona following his controversial ban from football after biting Italian defender Giorgio Chiellini during a 2014 FIFA World Cup group game. With a bad reputation in England, the striker sought the move away from the Premier League to avoid the intense scrutiny.

Coutino has so far remained on the good side of the press and without any major incident that is not likely to change.

The Brazilian is also known to be very settled on Merseyside with his young family and has a strong relationship with Klopp.

“I am very happy to sign a new contract here. It is a club that I am very grateful to and this shows my happiness here. I will work much harder to repay the belief shown in me,” Coutinho said in a club statement after signing his new contract.

“I signed this new contract to stay here for a few more years because it's a great honour for me.

“It gives me great happiness because I was welcomed here with open arms by everyone at the club and the supporters right from my first day. I am very thankful to this football club for everything.

“It's not just me — since me and my family arrived here we have been welcomed with open arms by everyone.

“We feel at home in this city, we feel a part of this city. It is a very important day for me, my wife and my daughter. I am happy — and everyone is happy at home!”

Liverpool’s day could get better later today if they can secure a trip to Wembley for the final of the EFL Cup.

They face Southampton tonight in the second leg of their semi-final clash, they go into the clash 1-0 down on aggregate.
