Patrícia Silva achieved a historic feat at the Paris Diamond League meeting, running the 800 meters in 3:58.74 minutes to become the second-fastest Portuguese athlete ever in the distance. The 26-year-old Sporting athlete shattered her previous personal best of 4:00.40, which she had set earlier this year.
With this time, Patrícia Silva, who finished seventh in the race, now trails only the national record of 3:57.71, held by Carla Sacramento since August 1998. The Sporting athlete surpassed Salomé Afonso on the all-time fastest list, as the Benfica athlete, who previously held second place with 3:59.52, finished 16th in Paris with a time of 4:06.36.
The 800-meter race was won by Britain's Georgia Hunter Bell, clocking 3:55.63, followed by Ethiopia's Freweyni Hailu (3:55.92). The podium was completed by Agathe Guillemot, who set a new French record with 3:56.24.
The Paris meeting also featured other significant results. In the 1500 meters, Audrey Werro recorded an impressive 1:53.80, becoming only the third athlete in history to break the 1:54 barrier. Her time is only behind the historical records of Czech Jarmila Kratochvílová (1:53.28 in 1951) and Soviet Nadezhda Olizarenko (1:53.43 in 1953).
The year's best world marks were also set in the 400 meters by Dominican Marileidy Paulino (48.48 seconds) and in the men's 800 meters by Canadian Marco Arop (1:41.84 minutes).
