STRIEDAME!

Over 100 Matches, Pressure, and Strict Rules. JOJ Šport Head on the Big Challenge and World Cup TV Rights

Sports fans primarily see player performances on screen, but behind every major broadcast lies a huge battle for broadcasting rights, tough negotiations, and multi-million dollar investments. This makes a look behind the scenes of the television business, which dictates what and where we will watch in the coming years, even more fascinating. Roman Neuschl, the head of JOJ Šport television, accepted the invitation to the latest episode of the video podcast Striedame!.

In an open and exceptionally engaging interview with hosts Julo and Muťo, he shed light on the workings of the sports rights market, the background behind securing the historic license for the FIFA World Cup, and the long-term strategy and foundational building of the sports television channel.

Acquiring broadcast rights for the planet's most-watched sporting tournament is far from easy, preceded by extremely demanding tenders. Roman Neuschl openly discussed how the modern television market has fundamentally changed post-pandemic, and with it, the approach to purchasing premium content. For him, watching matches has long been associated with deeper analysis, not just pure fan passion.

"Ever since I started managing JOJ Šport, I've said that I don't just watch sports; I perceive them to understand what's happening. I watch many sports broadcasts with Excel open," he described his perspective with a smile.

He also meticulously evaluated the immense logistical and financial leap brought by this year's World Cup overseas. A tournament with an expanded number of teams and a massive 104 matches across various time zones presents an extreme challenge for the television station. This led to a logical step: a strategic partnership with the public broadcaster, ensuring Slovak viewers won't miss a single match.

The video podcast also delved into why they approach such projects not just from a short-term perspective, but with a vision extending beyond the current decade. The television channel deliberately acquires rights for youth categories and smaller events to gradually help nurture a new generation of athletes who could shine on the world stage in a few years.

"If we were to do it today as it was done in the past – just buy what features Slovaks, make a quick buck, and then not care how it develops – we would end up creating another void," summarized the head of JOJ Šport, outlining the core philosophy of their long-term television project.

The conversation also touched upon the specific personalities who will enhance the television experience as experts during the tournament. The head of the sports channel revealed that prominent names like Marek Hamšík, Martin Škrtel, and Juraj Kucka will join the studio. The goal is to provide viewers with expert insights directly from within the locker room and from individuals who are in constant, close, daily contact with modern football.

In the latest episode of Striedame! on ŠPORT.sk, Roman Neuschl also answered how much it would help if the Slovak national team qualified for the tournament, why he believes many unexpected surprises could emerge at the upcoming World Cup, and why even the biggest television professionals almost immediately think of singer Shakira when recalling the World Cup.
